Climbing shoes

Climbing shoes are shoes specifically designed for rock and mountain climbing. They are not suitable for walking and hiking , so climbers have to carry them separately to the base camp before they begin their climbing expedition.

The climbing shoes are designed to fit the wearer’s feet closely, and the climber will often not wear socks for a better fit. There is little padding in the shoe which has a sticky rubber sole for better grip, even on wet surfaces. Though some companies have started using fabric and synthetic leather, the shoe upper is usually made from leather for most of the climbing shoes available today.

Climbing ropes

Ropes used for climbing usually have a core made of long twisted fiber and an outer sheath consisting of woven fiber. The inner core provides the rope with more than three fourth of its tensile strength. The outer sheath prevents damage to the inner core and also can be easily handled by the user. This type of rope is called kernmantle - kern for the interior core, mantle - woven exterior sheath.

The nylon ropes used originally for sailing was modified for use in climbing and caving applications. However, since safety is a critical consideration for climbing, the technical requirements are checked thoroughly before the rope is used. The rope characteristic may be further modified, depending on the application. For example, a thicker sheath may be required for caving.

Both static and dynamic ropes have a kermantle construction. Static ropes do not stretch much and are used hauling, rapelling and similar applications. The rope used to belay climbers and break their fall is a dynamic rope as it stretches to absorb the shock caused by their fall.
